Conservation Club- Protecting Pongo

This year, our children from last year’s Paignton trip, have decided to base our club activities on supporting the conservation of the Orangutan.

We found out that the Bornean and Sumatran orangutans in Indonesia are threatened by loss of habitat, poaching and illegal pet trade. We also found out that their genus name is “Pongo”, hence our club name, this year, is “Protecting Pongo”

Our activities this term ( chosen by the club members)will include cookery, collage, the ever popular endangered species Bingo and use of computers for research. One of the children is making an interactive orangutan game.

We also wish to explore the use of unsustainable palm oil in products here in the U.K. which is the main cause of orangutan habitats being destroyed by new palm oil plantations.

We made club badges.

We compared our own handprints to an orangutan’s hand and noticed that they could use their thumbs as we do.
