River Studies at Common Lake Stream

Ashmansworthy class had a lovely day learning about rivers today in Torrington. We walked down to Common Lake Stream (a tributary of th River Torridge)  from Torrington Common and investigated the following: How fast the river flows, what animals live in the river and the profile of the riverbed. Using proper scientific techniques, we recorded the data ready to follow up in class.  We also explored the river and identified some other features such as meanders, an oxbow lake, erosion and deposition. The children worked well together to carry out each task, and their behaviour was excellent. After a trudge back up the hill, we all enjoyed an ice-cream or lolly from the Hockings van before going back to school.
