Which material is best to make an umbrella?

In science this afternoon, Alminstone class investigated which materials would work best to make an umbrella with.  We tried newspaper, cling film, foil, plastic and felt.  Firstly, we poured 10ml of water onto the material and measured how much seeped through into the cup below.  Our results found that cling film, plastic and foil all proved to be water resistant, so we then considered other factors.  All were flexible, but plastic was the strongest as the other two ripped easily.  It was also thought that the foil may conduct the electricity from lightning in a storm, therefore would be a poor choice of material.
