Bodmin Jail

Ashmansworthy class visited Bodmin Jail today to find out about the history of crime and punishment at the prison. We learnt about how the prison had changed over the centuries and what type of crimes were committed. Our guide Jess told us all about the different types of punishments, tortures and executions that criminals could face. We had time to explore all the different areas and experience a little of what it must have been like to to be imprisoned there. (Some of the photos you may find upsetting.)

The prisoners were allowed a bath once every 3 months, whether they needed one or not!
One punishment for bad behaviour was to turn the handle for hours
Flogging the prisoners
Another punishment, the man cage
This woman was punished for killing her baby by throwing it in a well.
If you refused to eat, you were force-fed.
This woman was hanged for poisoning her husband with arsenic in his butter.
They let me out…eventually!
