Newsletter: 2nd October 2020

Merry Christmas!

Yes, it’s true. We’re barely into October and the “Christmas” word has been uttered in school. This is because FOWS are organising a Christmas Card fundraiser whereby you will be able to buy Christmas Cards with your child’s design on in the run-up to the festive period. If your child hasn’t yet come home singing carols and talking about Father Christmas, they probably will be doing so in the next week as we have to send all designs off by October 14th so the company can produce proofs. There is, of course, no obligation to buy but we really hope you will enjoy seeing your child’s artwork professionally presented in this form.

FOWS will also be running a competition for the best card design in each age group, with winning entries being offered for sale to the public via the village shop and other outlets:

We are having a Christmas card design competition at school. The entries need to be in by the 12th October so that we can pick 2 winners from years 1-6 and 1 winner from Sunflowers and Reception. The winning designs will be sold in the shop to raise more funds and the winners will all receive a prize.
Please encourage your child to try their best as the teachers are making the cards right now and please, please, please order some of your child’s beautiful designs when they are all done. A donation to FOWS is made with every pack you buy. I think you can get mugs and all sorts!
What a lovely thing to send you friends and relatives after a very testing year!!!

Devon Virutal Games Gymnastics Sequence

We know we have quite a lot of talented gymnasts in our school and hope this will be of interest to you:

The Devon Virtual Games Events hosted by Active Devon and the Devon School Games Organisers is now up and running. This series of events throughout the Autumn term will offer young people the opportunity to compete against themselves and others whilst maintaining social distancing.
All competitions are virtual, and you can enter as many of them as you like. The competitions are suitable to do at home, in your backyard or garden or at school. They give you the chance to team up virtually with your classmates, represent your school and compete against other children from across Devon!
The Autumn term series will run from the 14th September 2020 – 11th December 2020 with six different events for you to enter. Schools and home-schooled individuals will be able to submit their entries via an online link. Full details about entries and the format of the competition can be found HERE.

Developmental Language Disorder

One of the few good things to come out of the Covid situation is that there are many more information events and training for parents and carers becoming freely available. The free virtual event is open to you if you are interested in supporting your child with language development. If you would like to speak to someone in school about the event, please email Cathy Farmer cfarmer@woolsery.devon.sch.uk

Friends of Woolsery School

Ahead of the upcoming AGM, FOWS have released their annual accounts for your inspection. These can be found HERE. If you have any questions about FOWS finances, or any other aspect of the charity, please remember to come along to the AGM as advertised in last week’s Newsletter.

Parent Governor

Our Governing Board is looking for new parent Governors to fill time-limited vacancies. If you have an interest in the running of the school, we would love to hear from you. Please lodge your interest by filling out the online form HERE.

Road Crossing next week

I will be out of school at a meeting next Wednesday so will not be on the road crossing before and after school as usual. Please ask your child to look out for Mrs Farmer who will be there in the morning, and Mrs Nicholls who will be there in the afternoon. Thanks.

Edukid

Sophie Littlejohns will be visiting classes next week talking to the children about our ongoing project with the charity Edukid. As you will remember, we sponsor Leng Piseth, a little boy in Cambodia, which allows him to attend school.

Sophie is very aware of our Covid bubble security and will be adhering to our guidance throughout the visit in order to protect herself and your children.

Once we have formed our new School Voice groups, which should happen in the next few weeks, our Global and Charity Voice groups will be in touch with their fundraising ideas to support Leng in the coming year.

With best wishes

Matt Cole, Headteacher
