Life Education Base

This week we’ve had a visit from the Life Education Base which is the outreach part of our new Relatioships and Health Education package, SCARF. This children enjoyed working with Helen (and Harold the Giraffe) to find out about different aspects of social development. The foci for the children was as follows:

Sunflowers Taking Care Of Myself
Cranford All About Me
Burscott My Wonderful Body
Stroxworthy Meet The Brain
Alminstone It’s Great To Be Me
Ashmansworthy Decisions

The visit has been really helpful for teachers who are getting to grips with the new teaching material and we very much hope your child had a great time too.

Parent/Teacher Meetings

We will be holding our Autumn Term parent/teacher meetings the first week back after the half term break. Due to our current working restrictions, all appointments will after school time and you will be offered either a phone conversation or a face to face meeting. For face to face meetings, these will take place in your child’s class. We are putting the following mitigations in place:

  • There will be strict timings for appointments, with a maximum of 10 minutes per meeting
  • Parents waiting to come into the classroom will have to wait outside the classroom fire exit door and must be 2m from other parents.
  • Only one parent can attend per child unless there is a special educational need which needs to be discussed by both parents and the teacher. No children can attend
  • All adults must wear face coverings for the meeting and should sanitise hands before coming onto our site

The Autumn Term meetings are always the most important of all and we strongly encourage all parents to take part. Appointments will be arranged directly with your child’s teacher rather than through the Office. All classes have sent out information about parent-teacher meetings during this week, so if you’ve not received it, please contact your child’s teacher:

  • Mrs Phillips (Sunflowers)
  • Mrs Oyarzabal (Cranford)
  • Mrs Kersey (Burscott)
  • Mr Davies (Stroxworthy)
  • Mrs Dobson (Stroxworthy)
  • Mrs Farmer (Alminstone)
  • Miss Butler (Ashmansworthy)

Photo Update

As you will have read last week, we had really hoped to be able to give you a date for the new photo session with Tempest by the end of the day on Friday. Sadly this didn’t happen but we’re now pleased to confirm that the photos will be taken on Tuesday 17th November. The Photographer is happy to take  family photos as well as individual portraits, provided all children in the photo attend Woolsery Primary School or Sunflowers Preschool. Tempest will send home a print-out order form with your child and you will be able to place orders directly with them as shown on the form. Tempest anticipate that all photos will be with you by the end of term.

Updated Rules for Sickness and Diarrhoea

We are now working with updated guidelines for children with sickness and diarrhoea. Previously, children with a vomiting bug could return to school after 24 hours but our new guidance has changed.  Both conditions now carry a 48 hour exclusion time, meaning your child must be clear of symptoms for 48 hours before they can return to school. Please remember that this doesn’t necessarily have to be 2 full days – we can readmit your child for an afternoon session if that coincides with the end of the 48 hour period.

School Meals on ScoPay

We are really pleased with the feedback we have received from parents about online lunch ordering via our payment portal, ScoPay. However, we have had a few disappointed (and some distressed) children who have not received the dinner they were expecting because either the wrong meal has been ordered or the child won’t eat what has been ordered. At the present time, our admin staff are not able to go into classrooms to check lunch orders, so it is very unlikely a substitute will be available for your child when they collect their meal. If you could double check what you’ve ordered for your child before submitting, it would be really helpful. Thank you.

We are still looking for nominiations for two Parent Governor posts at school. Please see this article if you would like more information about the application process. Governance is a vital part of our school and we are looking for new people with a fresh pair of eyes and lots of enthusiasm, so please think carefully about whether you could be the next person to make that vital contribution to our school community.

Even though governor terms of office run for four years, you are still entitled to stand as a parent governor if your child will leave the school during that time. The full term would remain available to you.

Royal British Legion poppies will be on sale from Monday ahead of Rememberance Day on November 8th and Armistice Day on November 11th. In addition to traditional poppies, we will be selling:

  • Zip Pulls – 50p
  • Reflector Poppies – 50p
  • Wristbands – £1.00
  • Pencil Sharpeners – £1.00
  • Snap Bands – £1.50

Unfortunately, the children themselves won’t be able to take a leading role in organising the selling as they’re not allowed to move from class to class, but we will make sure everyone who brings the appropriate amount of money in is able to have something from the stock.

Friends of Woolsery School

The Friends of Woolsery School (Team Woolley) are holding their AGM next Thursday at 8pm via Zoom. FOWS very much needs new support from parents so if you can come along and support, give your ideas for future fundraising in this difficult Covid-19 period and even nominate yourself to go on to the Committee, FOWS would love to (virtually) see you! A particular role the committee be looking to recruit is someone to handle the charity’s social media accounts, and hope this will appeal to someone who is unable to commit to evening meetings. FOWS exists to make your child’s time at Woolsery Primary School even better – from Preschool to Year 6, so please come along if you can.

The Zoom code for joining the meeting is shown below:

Christmas Card Designs

I hope liked receiving a copy of your child’s Christmas Card design earlier in the week. The standard and variety of artwork created has been absolutely stunning. A massive thank you to FOWS for organising this event – it’s been really nice to do something across the whole school again!

You can order their design printed on wrapping paper, gift labels and mugs… as well as the cards themselves, of course. Please remember FOWS will receive a commission payment for every order received.

In order for the printing work to be turned around in time for you, you must order online by Sunday 18th October using the codes on the top left corner of the proof form which you’ve already received. You do NOT need to return the proof form we sent you as we took the decision to copy all of the designs rather than risk sending the originals home. Please note you will not be able to extend this deadline, which has been set for us by Cauliflower Cards.

All children’s artwork has been looked at by FOWS Committee members and they will be announcing the winner of their competition shortly, with the winning designs available for sale locally. Below is a random selection of designs from across the school:

With best wishes,

Matt Cole, Headteacher
