Science Week – Sound

How does sound travels?

In Sunflowers, Cranford, Foxdown and Orleigh classes this week we are learning about sound.

Day 1 ~Tuning Forks

Today we learnt how sound travels through the air.

We learnt that it vibrates through the air. We saw this by using a drum and some rice placed on top. We hit the drum and the rice jumped.

Then we performed our own experiment with tuning forks. We couldn’t see them vibrating with our eyes but when we put them in water, they moved so fast they made the water splash.

We learnt:-

“The longer the fork the lower the sound. The shorter the fork the higher the sound”

“when I banged the side of the table it vibrated more than hitting it on the middle of the table”

“the longer the tongs, the bigger the splash”
