Hot seating

We have been thinking about how the River Torridge can affect people in the locality. We put different characters in the ‘hot seat’ and asked them questions to find out how the river affects their lives.

Exploring maps

We have been busy using OS maps to search for places and features in our locality. We practised using grid references. We located the River Torridge and tracked it from source to sea. We looked for towns and villages that the river flows through.

The Journey of a River

We have been making zig zag books to explain the journey of a river. We shared our books with Stroxworthy Class.

Erosion, Transportation and Deposition

Today, the year 4s have been finding out about erosion. We looked at a selection of rocks and tried scraping them to see which would erode most easily. We then investigated transportation and deposition by pouring water down some guttering. We observed what happened to the sediment (rocks and soil). We noticed that the sediment […]

Investigating Transportation and Deposition

Today, the Year 5s used guttering and a mixture of stones, sand and soil to investigate how the flow of water can move (transport) and drop (deposit) sediment.

Probots

We have been working together to programme ‘Probots’.

Making Rivers

In Alminstone Class we have been making rivers in the playground to explore the course of the water. After deciding where the source of our rivers would be, we talked about the direction that we thought the water would travel in and the paths that the rivers would take. Then, to create our rivers, we […]

Gymnastics

We have been working in pairs to devise and perform short sequences. We evaluated each performance and worked on our own sequences to improve them. We were especially looking for fluency, control, tension and extension.

Learning about decimals

We have been learning about parts of a whole number. We found out that a tenth is a whole divided into ten parts and hundredth is a whole divided into one hundred parts. There are ten hundredths in one ten. We used beads, multilink and money to illustrate this.

The Peacock and the Crane

In Guided Reading today we read one of Aesop’s Fables called ‘The Peacock and the Crane’. We were describing the characters’ feelings and actions and looking for evidence in the text to support our answers. We produced ‘freeze frames’ to represent the peacock at the beginning of the story when he was vain and boastful.

Shellvis’s Weekend

Last weekend I enjoyed my time at Megan’s house. Megan took me to her Gran’s house on Saturday and for the rest of the time I sat on the coffee table munching cucumber and relaxed in Megan’s bedroom. I am looking forward to another sleepover this weekend!

Finding out about Greece.

Today in Alminstone Class we have been using atlases to help us find out more about the country of Greece. We have learnt where Greece is in Europe and where it is in the world. We have also used the atlases to find the capital of Greece (Athens) and we have located some other major […]

Snail diaries

Hi everyone. I hope you all had a good Christmas. I spent the holidays at Mrs Stevens’ house where I enjoyed relaxing and munching my way through some tasty snacks. On Christmas morning, I was very pleased to discover a juicy stick of cucumber (my favourite!) in my stocking. Thank you Santa! It is good […]

French Dinner

On Thursday, everyone enjoyed a French-themed meal of steak frites, followed by chocolate éclair, all washed down with a glass of red wine. It was délicieuxeuse! The children in Alminstone gave the hall a French feel with flags and French menus. Some children even managed to order their meals in French!

A name at last!

I am very pleased to announce that I have finally been named… SHELLVIS! Thank you Alminstone.

More snail diaries.

This morning in Alminstone Class, the children were busy deciding on a French themed menu for their school dinner choice next Thursday (4th December). I was horrified when someone mentioned that snails are eaten in France! I had to bury myself in compost before they got any ideas about putting me on the menu! I […]

The diary of the nameless snail.

Today has been quite a noisy one! This morning the children were excitedly using something that they called ‘road atlases’ to search for ‘Victorian seaside resorts’. As you can see in the picture, I decided to take a look for myself when all the children had gone home. In maths everyone was working hard to solve […]

Introducing our newest class member!

This half term we have welcomed a new member into our class…a giant African land snail! He is not quite a giant yet though as he is still young. In class the children have been doing some research to find out more about land snails and how to keep them happy and healthy. We have all been […]
